One young couple kicked off the new year with the best gift. The couple is the parents of a healthy baby boy, who just happens to be the first new year’s baby born in a Mesquite hospital in eight years.

“I never thought I would be so lucky to have the first baby born in the new year,” said Mesquite resident Ringo Frinka Rivera Gomez, the baby’s father. “When I found out he was the first one, it made me sentimental.”

Gomez and his girlfriend Maira Alejandra Gomez, who is from Cucuta, Colombia, gave birth to a 7-pound 12-ounce boy named Frinka Alberto Rivera Gomez at 5:41 p.m. on Jan. 1 at Dallas Regional Medical Center.

“It was my grandfather’s name, so I passed it on to him,” Ringo said.

Upon seeing her new baby, Maira said she couldn’t think straight.

“All I felt was happiness and love,” she said.

For Ringo, it was all about his son’s little feet and nose.

“I love his nose and the way he opens his little toes,” he said.

Dallas Regional added a labor and delivery unit last year after seeing the need in the area for one.

Ringo said the couple chose Dallas Regional because of the closeness to his residence and they are glad they did.

“The nurses are very helpful and giving,” he said.

As an act of kindness, the hospital presented the couple with a gift basket of goodies for their little man.

“It was so beautiful and sweet of the staff to give him a beautiful first gift,” Ringo said.

Frinka is Ringo’s first child. Maira has an 18-month-old daughter.
